Flying through the house (not literally), I noticed some movement in the lake nearby. At closer glance, what I saw was a cormorant swimming towards the edge of the lake, holding his head high with a good size fish in his beak. I stopped in my tracks, did an about-face, and full-on sprinted across the house for my camera and a fresh SD card. I ran to the lake end of the house, threw open the blinds and quietly opened the window (where I had previously removed the window screen for such photo opps) and slowly leaned 2-feet out the window to photograph the cormorant fighting with a flip-flopping fish.

I giggled softly as I continued to watch the bird handle the fish as if with tongs or chop sticks. The fish would wiggle just enough to get out of the bird’s beak, then flop to the ground. The cormorant would position himself at a better angle then pluck the fish with a better grip. I was pleased to see he finally got the fish eaten before an osprey or eagle swooped down to snatch it.

I was also pleased with my impromptu”catch of the day” and later amazed at the coloring around the cormorant’s eye.
